bedstor, no offense meant, but not so sure about that Prefetch suggestion.
while there
might be an individual prefetch item that's corrupt (not absolutely certain on that, but those have nothing to do with the browser), read this...i did after i got an alert that TuneUp Utilities (horrible, dangerous program, which i uninstalled, along with anything ParetoLogic sells, especially RegCure and DriverCure...can't stress the DANGEROUS part enough) said i'd deleted prefetch items that i hadn't.
about deleting Prefetch items:
http://www.edbott.com/weblog/?p=743about blocking tracking cookies from marketing sites (3rd party cookies):
http://www.edbott.com/weblog/?p=742about eliminating tracking cookies:
http://www.edbott.com/weblog/archives/000385.htmli agree about purging the Cookies; i do it all the time & have a Firefox security plugin that fills in all my data for me when i next need to login somewhere because i've deleted my cookies &/or my index.dat while housecleaning.
some kind of popup stopper is indicated & some housecleaning...may even want to purge the index.dat file but that's another story, but will post about this if asked/needed.
hopefully you have your hosts file backed up; if not, it may need a few entries cleaned out. again, a whole 'nother story on how to, but will post about this if asked/needed.
IE8 is set to block all popups except the ones i designate (Ctrl > click to allow one in case i forget & go somewhere besides Microsoft or McAfee).
Firefox is set to block all ads (AdBlock Plus plugin...actually went to one site that wouldn't let me view without ads, so i left), popups (misses a few so i use PopUp Stopper Pro from Panicware)
Chrome is set to restrict how 3rd party cookies are handled...only has allow all, block all & restrict, but no other settings except to delete cookies it shows you. don't see a popup stopper in the options.
anyway, please read about the Prefetch folder, at the first link i provided, before doing anything to it. that's my $1.298 (dollar, two ninety eight cents) worth.
