I can honestly say that I've never read an entire pop-up, much less responded to one. I hate them more than one could imagine!

The only things Pop Ups...or Pop Under ads are successful in accomplishing is getting the computer user to download applications that will eventually corrupt a computer! Happens at work all the time. You go to click on the X box in the corner to close the ad... and by doing so activate an invisible download into your computer. I never knew that was possible! But guess what - it sure is Mad

My son installed "Stop-the-Pop" and I LOVE it! I have to hold the shift or Ctrl key to open wanted windows, but it's worth it! Big Grin
Also - he was going through files on the computer yesterday and found all sorts of spyware and other files that we didn't download! Eek

Ditto on that. If I even saw something I had been looking for for a long time, I wouldn't buy it, just because it was a pop up! Mad I HATE THEM! Mad

I have them all blocked, so I never actually see them, but I suspect the odds of buying anything from such marketing are very, very, extremely low ~ somewhere below zero.

No way! I hate pop-ups and shut them down immediately. They are so annoying that I wouldn't want to encourage marketers to continue using them. Pop-ups suck!

Well I've never bought anything from TV, magazines/newspapers (unless it's a coupon), radio, billboard, airplane, sandpicture or anything. If I saw a pop-up I wanted, I'd go. I've think I've gotten too much in the habit of closing it before I read it though. Usually most of them aren't selling food or something. I think they've also got a bad image of being scams because of a few.

Even though it seems like everyone here ignores them (I block them completely) pop-up ads have been shown to have a higher click-through rate than banner ads, which is why advertisers are willing to pay more money for them. Annoying, definitely, but apparently more effective than banners.

A lot of sites that have them I avoid going back to those sites as much as possible. I mean come on-I am on a site to see something and a pop up comes on trying to block my viewing of a web page so I can go to their website or whatever to be confronted with a boring ad? No Thanks

To date I have not purchased
anything from a pop-up, but the
majority of them do not bother
me. I know that many of the
"free" sites I access could not
afford to stay in business
without them, so I just accept
them as part of my net experience.
The only exception is the very
few I have encountered which I was
unable to close. No little X in the
corner, they stuck around till I
re-booted.

Jenny - I use CookieCop2 form PCMag. It was free when I got it, but I've been told they charge for it now.

Other ways:

Use Opera web browser (opera.com) instead of Netscape or Internet Explorer. It has an option for rejecting pop-ups

Use one of the other programs recommended in one of these threads:

(and I think there are more burried in the beginner's issues section)

I can't really tell you which is best of those, but ivnj seems to have strong opinions about it.
