The Internet: What lies ahead?
Cyberattack tops list of worries

By Daniel Sieberg
CNN

One of the best places to start trying to answer that question is with a man widely known as one of the "fathers of the Internet." Between 1968 and 1982, Vinton Cerf played a key role in developing the networking technology for wider use, beginning with his time at the University of California, Los Angeles, and later with the U.S. Department of Defense's Advanced Research Project. He was the senior member of a team working on ARPANET, the precursor to today's Internet.

During a recent e-mail exchange -- appropriate enough -- Cerf wrote that he believes the Internet will continue to enhance people's communication through sound, video and collaboration. Interestingly, he also noted "with some confidence" that 90 percent of all applications on the Internet have yet to be invented.

"Nobody knows for sure what lies ahead -- and the history of the Internet has taught us to expect the unexpected," said Susannah Fox, associate director of the Pew Internet Project and lead author of the report. - CNN.com

Current issues:

1--New top-level domains

Currently available:

.com
.org
.net
.edu (restricted use)
.gov (restricted use)
.mil (restricted use)
.aero (restricted use)
.biz (restricted use)
.coop (restricted use)
.info
.museum (restricted use)
.name
.pro (restricted use)

Current legislation may give us two new domains, .kid and .xxx, which probably won't have restricted use but will have regulatory statutes.

2--Some countries are suing the US for control of the internet.

Currently, the US owns the backbone, and you have to "plug in" to the backbone to surf the web. Some countries would like a piece of the pie, and they are suing for the right to control a portion.

3--The internet is filling up.

InterNIC has franchised out to hundreds of companies that are licensed to register web address assignments and domain names. Addresses are currently defined with 32-bits, giving a maximum possible number of addresses at 4,294,967,296. Seems like a lot, but it has become necessary to develop a new version (IPv6) which uses 128-bit addressing.

The new total number of addresses available has 32 digits. That ought to keep us happy for awhile.
