I work for a new broadband ISP. We've only been in business for a year and a half and we're still developing. One problem that I have encountered is that a lot of our customers are getting internet or using computers for the very first time and they want to build web pages or post pictures for their family to look at. Currently we offer them a tiny 5MB of webspace to do this with. The problem we have is that we don't support frontpage extensions and the interface is standard FTP. Well, if you're familiar with FTP and basic HTML at all, you can IMAGINE how very very PAINFUL it is to try and explain HTML and such over the phone to a person who's never used a computer before. It's like a root canal without novacain!

Anyway, so I proposed to my boss that we offer a web interface for our customers which would allow them to build simple pages based on preset templates, and also to be able to use this web interface to upload their pictures. I think this would make our lives soooo much eaier. Theirs too!

Anyway, so he wants me to research what we need to do to implement such a service. I assume something like that could be handled in Visual Basic or ASP, but I am not familiar enough with either to write the program.

Does anyone have any reccomendataions on how we would go about implementing this feature?

Does anyone know any pre-fab code we could use that would help?

Thanks!

Kat

That sounds like living in customer support hell...

One quick fix for the HTML part might be to just tell them to build the page in Microsoft Word and then save as HTML, - but that still leaves the FTP part.

There are a number of products that might help, it'll take a while sifting though all the options. I've never used this one, but I know some folks have had good luck with it. It's called "Smarty template engine" You can find it here http://smarty.php.net/whyuse.php

If that doesn't work, try visiting "Hotscripts.com" You'd probably find something written in Perl, PHP, Python, Java, JavaScript, etc. listed under the "content management" sections for each language.

Good luck!

You may want to check these directories of CGI and PHP scripts. There may be a premade script for your needs. Many are free.
