Hi ppl, I have here a Dell Dimension 8300, which is giving me fits trying to get it to connect to the net. I had to clear it of a bunch of viruses and spyware, and now that its clean, it will not connect. I have it on my home network, (DSL), and have ran the Network setup wizard several times, to no avail. I have also tried uninstalling the network adapter on it, and re-installing it, no luck. I have done the "repair" option on all network connections on the 8300 and my main comp, nothing. It will connect in Safe Mode, and will browse with virtually no problem. Both comps are running the Windows Firewall, and Antivir antivirus programs. The Dell has 256MB RAM, 100 Gig HD and a 2.6 ghz processor. I am running out of ideas on what to do next, any thoughts?

Have you replaced the winsock2 registry entry? Often when spyware is removed, the winsock2 entry is damaged.

I think you can download a repair tool from this site.

Google search results

I haven't used that particular tool before. What I normally do is copy a known good Winsock2 registry entry to a jump drive, then paste it into the damaged machine. Be sure to reboot.

The Winsock2 is at:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\WinSock2

I hope this does the trick...

System Restore might work if the registry has a backup enabled?

Sorry bedstor, I had to turn System restore off to get rid of the viruses, lol. I'll be trying Dwight's suggestion later this evening, got a ball game to go to with my son shortly. Thanks though!
