I just dowloaded Yahoo Messenger. If I happen to close Yahoo, all of the icons in my tray disappear. Any idea why this would happen and how I might prevent it?

Thanks!

Hi Giz!

I havent experienced that phenomena before, but have you tried the old "uninstalling, and re-installing? routine? I know its most likely a dumb question, but I'll ask anyway! I was having alot of trouble with yahoo messenger causing "ypager" faults, and having to be shut down, and did the uninstall/re-install routine, which so far has worked out ok. Maybe someone else has a better idea of whats wrong, and I'm sure someone will, but just thought I'd mention this, LOL. Good luck! Nice seeing you in the chatroom yesterday!

After numerous other problems today, I finally resorted to uninstalling Yahoo again!

Maybe after I get my new ISP the first week in November I'll try again. It's a shame, since many of my friends are on Yahoo...seems like every time we install it though, we have problems!

Thanks van, and if I can ever get back into the chat today, I hope I see you there! big grin

When Windows Explorer crashes, the "System Tray" icon display often will not restart. The "background" applications themselves continue to run, but you don't have the "systray" display.

Just to be sure we're understanding each other, I don't mean Internet Explorer, the Web browser program, but rather "Windows" Explorer. Windows Explorer is your Windows Operating System. You can open Explorer by pressing and holding the "Windows" key (usually between "Ctrl" and "Alt" on the left side of the keyboard).

With the "Windows" key pressed, press the "E" key. This should open Windows Explorer. You can also right click on "My computer" and select "Explore" to open it.

You can verify this by pressing the "Ctrl" + "Alt" + "Delete" keys together (at the same time) and looking in the "Close Program" window and seeing what is running.

You can do this once (this is often referred to as the "Windows 3 finger salute) before the Windows Explorer crash and taking note of what is running. I suggest you close everything, then do the 3 keys together and write down what is running. Then if this "crash" occurs, check and see if everything is still running.

As far as the Yahoo Messenger program, I have to agree with vansrme: Try the "old un-installing, and re-installing routine".

I hope this will help!

Or try http://www.trillian.cc ! U can communicate with AIM, MSN, YAHOO, ICQ, and IRC from the same application! No need to switch! Try that! And of course there's always a free version available! I've used if for years! Its great!

As always cool

I have been experiencing Explorer problems as well over the last few days. I think it has to do with my ISP, which I will be changing on 11/4 to a broadband connection (yippee!)

I'm hoping my explorer problems cease when I have a new provider!

It seems very unlikely to me that your ISP would have anything to do with your problems with Explorer. All the ISP does is provide a connection to the Internet. All the communications software is provided by Windows and the maker of your dial-up modem.

What is going on with your Windows? (Explorer is windows, Windows is Explorer, if that makes sense).

Sorry to be the bringer of bad news, but these problems don't disappear when you get broadband.

I intend to erase and re-install everything...I think something has corrupted my c: drive, since when I run a defrag it stops about 3/4 of the way through saying that something was changed in a particular file.

That happened the first time I tried to defrag, and at the time I didn't write down the name of the file. Now it doesn't want to defrag at all.

It's a pain to erase and re-install, but I'm thinking it's the best way to clear up whatever is out there.

The problem with your defrag is quite common. What happens is some "background" application runs during the defrag operation. When that happens, the hard drive is "written to", which means the data on the hard drive has changed. And that means the defrag operation has to start over.

Perhaps the easiest solution to this problem is to run the scandisk and defrag operations in Windows "Safe Mode".

To get into Safe Mode, restart your computer. At the first screen image (*or the "POST beep") tap repeatedly on the F8 key. This will open the "Windows Start Menu". Use your Arrow keys to scroll to #3, Safe Mode. With Safe Mode selected, press the "Enter" key.

When the computer is started, shut off your screen saver

Right click on Desktop, select "properties". Click on the Screen Saver tab, and select "None". Click "OK".

Run the Scan Disk first (to insure there are no errors) then the Defrag. If it has been quite a while since you last defragged, it may take a long time to complete. You can let this run overnight, if you like.

Also, note that it will take a long time at 10%. This is normal as the computer is figuring out which programs you run most frequently and sequencing the data accordingly. This will improve the speed performance in those programs you use most.

When the defrag is complete, restart your screen saver and restart the computer. It will automatically restart in the "Normal Mode".

I hope this helps!
