Can anyone suggest something for toothache, i cannot get to the dentist until next Wednesday and it is driving me mad. Thanks *********************************************************** 07-17-03, 08:48 AM bedstor Hi Sorry to read about your Problem Frown If your ache is only "Now and then"(Mild) then I'd go to the chemist and buy a bottle of "toothache tincture" (thats what you ask for) just apply a spot on your finger and dab onto the affected area (No good if your gums are inflamed Frown) Take a "Solpadeine" tablet if the pain is off the scale? Frown These are like a Industrial strength Paracetemol tablet Eek(Ask chemist about dosage) and visit this link for info: www.solpadeinehelp.org.uk/solpdff.php They can be brought in Large Supermarket (Asda Kwiksave ect)or Superdrug This will numb your mouth for a few hours ,and should get you through the day? Here is a price guide to Solpadeine Tabs: http://www.expresschemist.co.uk/category_1028_PainSolpadeine.html
07-17-03, 09:58 AM Georgia85 Nothin worse than a toothache! Sorry you are in pain but glad you knew to make a dentist appt. Some people use Ambesol or Oragel for a quick fix (both available over the counter at any store that has a pharmacy section). And this is an old "red-neck" remedy that seems to work (I'd never do it tho)...if you have a chipped tooth or if the filling has fallen out pack some BC Powder into the tooth. I usually don't recommend home remedies but apparently many swear by that.
07-17-03, 12:02 PM Februarycat Thanks for those suggestions. I have ordered some Oragel from Boots as they had run out and will collect it tomorrow and also will pick up some Solpadeine on the way to work. Hopefully that will see me through until Wednesday. Frown
07-17-03, 01:52 PM Georgia85 Let us know how it goes at the dentist Big Grin
07-17-03, 04:54 PM honilov I've heard a lot of people say that holding some whiskey in your mouth, over the infected tooth will help.
Don't swallow it.
07-17-03, 08:39 PM Sherasi Honi, why not? It would certainly make you feel better! Eek
(only if you are of legal age of course!)
07-18-03, 09:07 AM Ewood27 My late wife swore by oil of cloves for toothache, gently rubbed on the sore spot.
You have my sincere sympathy, and I hope these suggestions work.

07-18-03, 10:47 AM Februarycat Well I had an awful night last night with the toothache, so rang up first thing this morning and he took one look and said it will have to come out. I was so nervous but just thought that it cannot be worse that the toothache. In fact it was not as bad as I thought and was over quickly. My mouth is obviously a bit sore and I cannot eat anything at the moment but so pleased to get rid of it. Thanks for all your suggestions.
07-19-03, 12:13 AM Georgia85 Wow, that seems like a rather drastic measure. You must have had some serious decay or root damage in that tooth. Remember, you should go to a dentist every 6 months. But I am glad that wont be in pain anymore. Just be careful with what you drink. You don't want to end up with dry sockets. This means nothing carbonated for several days. The carbonation will dissolve the coagulated blood in the tooth socket and you won't heal quickly and will end up in pain again.
07-19-03, 01:43 PM Februarycat The thing is I go regularly to the dentist and am always brushing my teeth. The tooth that he took out had been filled about twice and bits of the tooth had chipped off. My mouth is not too bad today but am being careful with what I'm eating and drinking, hopefully it should heal OK.
07-21-03, 01:22 AM Sherasi Georgia, we have had no money to go to the dentist.. Frown I brush my teeth very well.. and I also had that treatment to "fill-in" the deep crevases of my teeth .. the white stuff that reduces risk of decay cuz it makes the teeth surface more shallow...
07-28-03, 02:58 AM Ewood27 Since this thread ran out of steam I have developed toothache. Seeing the dentist today, but I can vouch for the effectiveness of clove oil. It tastes foul, but numbs the pain.
Strong prescription painkillers left over from some other incident also help!
07-28-03, 11:48 AM Sherasi Ewood be careful of out-of-date medications.. some of them gain potency when they are older.. can really hurt yourself.
07-28-03, 12:40 PM Februarycat Edwood, hope you get your tooth sorted out, I know what its like. I did not try the clover oil after all, but I know a lot of people say it works for them but you do have to take care with it.
07-28-03, 12:41 PM Jelp01 I haven't been to a dentist in I don't know how many years. One of those things I can't afford, either.
What I do when I have a toothache is slam my fist into a wall as hard as I can. Doesn't do much for the toothache, but this way I'm now focusing on the pain in my hand........
Seriously, a regimen of ice and plain ol' aspirin does the trick. I'm careful not to take too much aspirin, and usually the toothache is gone within a day.
07-28-03, 02:43 PM Ewood27 Thanks for your good wishes, everyone. Earlier this year he fitted a crown on the base of a "failed" real tooth. All he had to do was take a tiny amount off the top of the crown so that my bite doesn't put excessive pressure on one spot of my jaw. It's still tender, but getting better already.
Sherasi, thank you for the warning about dated medicines. These are only three months past the "use by" date, which I am sure has a large margin of safety built in. Anyway, they work fine, and I'll be using the last tonight to ensure a good night's sleep. Anything more complex than painkillers I wouldn't dream of using after their date.
Oh, and Februarycat, I'm sure "clover oil" was a typing error. It's actually clove oil, from cloves. If you do use it, be as sparing as you can.
