123, now tell us any herbal medicine or combination of such medicines which is not surpassed by modern synthetic versions of the same or by entirely new medicines.
I'm an advocate of herbal remedies but people do need to really understand that "Natural" does not always mean "Safe".
Some things, like ginger, are incredibly unlikely to cause any trouble but other herbal and traditional remedies can be quite dangerous- Ephedra, for example, can be used to alleviate some respiratory ailments but can also cause heart troubles.
Feverfew, effective for fever, headaches and, for some, arthritic pain can cause reproductive problems for women.
Valerian (which tastes and smells like fermented sweatsocks and from which Valium is derived) is almost as addictive as the pharmacutical compound and can, for the predisposed or taken in too large a dose, cause respiratory failure. ... and so on.
Also, some herbs cannot be used together and are contraindicated by some prescription and over the counter meds.
My point being that while herbal medicine IS often a viable option, people need to treat it as medicine... do your research, check with different sources, consult your primary care provider and an experienced herbalist/homeopath/naturopath.... Medicinal plants can be as effective as conventional pharmacuticals... and just as dangerous when used without proper precautions.
