Hi,

Glucose in blood increases becoz the pancrease fails to produce necessary insulin, right?

Then, what are the main reasons for the failure of pancrease to produce insulin?

If a person fasts for 3 days, without food and without drink, will his glucose level increases?

Thanks.

I thought it warranted mentioning that there are other instances that can lead to increased glucose levels in the blood. Medications such as epinephrine, birth control pills, corticosteriods, and diuretics can cause elevated levels...in addition to renal failure, pancreatitis, and over eating.

One reason for the pancreas failing to produce insulin is due to the destruction of the insulin producing cells by the immune system. But there are instances where the pancreas produces insulin yet the body doesn't recognize it and the tissues don't respond to it.

Also, in a healthy person, fasting for 3 days results in low glucose levels.

I don't think that fasting for three days is ever the answer to anything. It is not healthy to go without any sort of nutritional intake for a period of time. Most fasters are allowed to include water and perhaps rice in their diets. Complete and total fasting is not a good idea.
