I have had a mild case of arthritis in my feet and fingers for a number of years.

Saturday morning I woke up with the damnest case of gout in my left big toe - couldn't walk..

Put up with it all day Sunday...

Went to the store Monday morning , almost went to the doctor, but started looking it up on the internet..

Was I surprised to find out how to treat it (gout)....

RED TART CHERRY JUICE....100%
Found out that every article about gout and arthritis said to drink about 6 oz's every day...

Took my first swig about noon, by afternoon I was still in bad shape and went out and rented a pair of crutches...Took 2 Aleves...
By 6 or 7 that evening, I could get about without the crutches...

Next morning there was still pain, but I could get a shoe on and hobble around without crutches... Continued with the Cherry juice (100%) and 2 Aleves this morning and I feel so much better...Absolute no arthritis in my fingers and a lot less pain in my foot and the swelling is going down...

Got problems ? Try it out....

I will have to remember that. My doctor just told me to load up on anti-inflammatory drugs at the first sign of an attack. My first and last attack was over a year ago, but man, I would have done anything to stop the pain. You should have seen me trying to hobble into the pharmacy on a stick to buy crutches. It was a pathetic sight.

Anyway, thanks for the tip.

The gout is caused (to inflame) by high uric acid in the blood. Uric acid deposits micro crystals in the affected joint, these in turn cause the inflamation and pain.

In order to keep the uric acid down one can modify their diet to reduce the uric acid levels. Reduce or remove the following from diet:

* liver, kidneys, tripe, sweetbreads and tongue.
* Excessive amounts of red meat.
* Shellfish, fish and scallops.
* Peas. lentils and beans.
* Alcohol.

I know that the medications use increase urination, causing the body to purge the uric acid. It may be that drinking Cherry Juice does this as well.

Here's what I don't understand. I've been dieting for two weeks, eating all of the right things and haven't even touched alcohol in over three weeks. But today I have a flair up of gout in my left ankle. Worse attack in over a year, to the point where I'm on crutches. If you want to see something pathetic, watch someone who is 100 pounds overweight try to walk on crutches... Roll Eyes

The only thing I can think of is maybe I haven't been drinking enough water to flush the uric acid out of my system. How can you get a Gout attack if you've been eating all of the right things for weeks? Could it be the reduction of fluid intake that caused it?

I'm also wondering if maybe it's all of the extra walking that I've been doing that aggravated the joint? How can one loose weight if you're going to get gout every time you exercise? (Frustration setting in.)

I have been drinking those chocolate Slim Fast shakes. Could that have caused my attack?

It is possible that you have had those crystals in your joint for some time; with the added exercise you most likely aggravated the condition. IF your diet is a “crash diet” then your blood serum level of Uric acid may have suddenly rose as your body releases it “stored” fuel (fat) which can contain lots of added stuff besides fat. You don’t just lose fat in the process of dieting, your body will also consume muscle mass to make up for the reduced trace elements and protein intake.

I do not know all the changes you have made in your diet, however I do know that it can take up to a full year before the body readjusts to a new fuel supply (diet) during that period many chemical systems can go off balance, in the first month more noticeable changes take place. Although the body is adaptable to fuel changes, it takes a while for the adaptation to be 100%.

The first three months of a life style change (not a “diet” in the sense of crashing calories/fats/sugars, but a long term commitment to less fat/sugars/nutritional changes) are crucial and will be the “hardest” on the body. I you have been eating wrong all of your life, and then just 2 weeks of proper eating will not counter the years of bad foods. Mind what we eat we absorb and it becomes part of us, you could already have high levels of uric acid in your body, thus your body will require time to find its new balance.

I do not know what is in the slim fast shakes. I will assume some interesting “stuff”. Is it soy based (soy powder is used in many “diet” formulas due to its protein content)? If so then you are getting a higher amount of lentil (dry bean) in you diet without even knowing it. Are you taking the one with soy protein? (Ultra Slim Fast). I know that I used Whey (animal by product) Protein shakes when I was weight lifting, the soy protein shakes are less efficient for take up of protein and with rheumatoid arthritis I stay away from the things on the list, with the exception of red meat and peas, but since the price of cow has gone through the roof I am eating less red meat.

I would suggest seeing Doctor, having the gout checked and while you are in that process try drinking more clear fluids.

Water is the life liquid – during the summer months I drink a gallon a day (but then I work outside in the 90, 95, 100+ degree temperatures. And yes I do urinate a lot during the day, but my urine runs clear, almost as clear as the water I take in. Dark or colored urine isn’t a good thing.

Juices work too, the clear juices, preferably those that do not have added sugars; Cherry juice is a good one. Also, if you don’t like the taste of water, you can use herbal (non-caffeinated) tea bags.

Use flax seed or omega 3 oil to help reduce inflammation and tissue damage.

Most likely your body is adapting to its new fuel, as you loose weight your body is shedding more than just fat, its also going to consume some of its muscle for essentials like protein, trace minerals.

As for exercise, do as much as you can but don’t “push” yourself. You can still get more exercise just by parking further from the store doors.

With both of my knees being operated on in August last year, I fell into the “weight gain/more pain/less activity/more weigh gain” game myself. I hit the weight pile again, working the upper body mostly, doing a low impact cardio (stationary bike). It is harder to get sufficient exercise in just working the upper body, however a little can go a long way.

Yes it is frustrating. I empathize with you on that.

Thanks for all of this good information. What is flax seed or omega 3 oil? Can I get it in a nutrition store?

I still have the pills that they gave me the last time I had this. They have been expired for 6 months but I'm still taking them. They didn't seem to do any good before anyway.

Yes, I have a lot of experience putting weight on, and little taking it off. Just 15 years ago I was actually under weight. To go from being under weight to 100 lbs over weight I'm sure has caused havoc on my systems. I'm doing pretty good though so far. I've laxed a couple of days but over all I've done well. I've lost about 8 pounds but it was mostly water weight.

This gout has to go though. I am sure that when I am at my appropriate weight that it will be better. I haven't had an occurrence like this for about a year or more. Then I read this thread... Wink That'll do it every time I guess.

Sorry its been so long for a reply.

Flax Seed and Omega can be found in the vitamin section of just about any drug store around here.

Although I am certain that a "health food" store, which specializes would have alarger selection.

This weekend at the Mall I note that GMC has both.

One should not take any medication that is past its expiration date. Although most just degrade to uselessness I think we all know that most chemical degrade over time to other chemicals. so there is always a risk that way.

Yes I'm certain that the gout will improve whe you get to an "optimum" weight. However it may never be 'cured' in that you will not have a risk for a return again.

One thing you can look into that could help is BodyTalk. It’s an alternative health care system that is getting great results with Arthritis and other health care problems. They have an online radio show http://www.bodytalksystem.com/radio/index.cfm on Wednesday the 14th on June and it’s specifically orientated to Arthritis. It’s free so it might be worth a listen

Cheers
Chris

Hi there, don't know if you are still on the lookout for help with joint problems? I have arthritus and do take anti-inflamatories, but don't want to take too many. My doctor suggested Glucosamine tablets. (not a brand name, it's the ingredient)They are not too pricey here and come in 500mg capsules. On the bottle it recomends 3 capsules a day, but my doc told me to double that. It takes about a month to kick in, but I really find it helps. Don't try it if you are allergic to seafood though, it's made from shells, I think.

Hi,
Emu Oil is a really good alternate treatment for arthritis. It is natural anti inflammatory and contains high amounts of omega vitamins. Of course, it kills perfectly innocent emus, but the important thing is that I make money.

Edited to remove ad and to add a bit of humor.

I've been having quite a bit of trouble with arthritis also, and have been taking 1500 mg of glucosamine a day for quite some time. I don't notice that it helps much until I stop taking it. Then, boy oh boy!

So obviously it is helping. Some doctors recommend it and some think it's useless. I guess it depends on the person and their level of joint degeneration/inflammation whether it will help.
