What two men independently prepared the first liquid oxygen within days of each other ? What temperature must be reached to form liquid oxygen at atmospheric pressure ?
Karl Wilhelm Scheele and Joseph Priestly simultaniously discovered oxygen in 1771. However, due to its extremely low BP @ atmospheric pressure (50.35K) it was one of the last gasses to be liquified.
William Hampson and Carl von Linde both obtained patents (with two weeks of each other!) in 1895 for air liquefaction, both employed the Joule-Thompson expansion process with regenerative cooling.
Hampson's approach was simple, but Linde's was more efficient and became the industrial standard process for gas liquefaction.
My first post and a fun one! I hope it's right!

Well, I have long returned the library books that I got my answer from, but they said that Louis-Paul Cailletet and Raoul-Pierre Pictet were the first two people to prepare liquid oxygen.
