From bbc h2g2
quote:
The biography of Julius Caesar by...Suetonius says that a comet was seen over Rome just after the assassination of Caesar in 44BC, which was believed to be his soul ascending to heaven.
...
William the Conqueror saw a bright comet, which we now know to be Halley's comet, in 1066. This was perceived by King Harold as a dire omen, but as a favourable one by William. Indeed, William's battle cry came: 'A new star, a new King'. Several months later, Harold was indeed killed at the Battle of Hastings and William had an image of the comet embroidered in the Bayeux Tapestry. A group of terrified Saxons is seen looking up at it; a legend reads, 'They are in awe of the stars.'
The year 1066 arrived some 1109 years after Caesar's death in 44 BC.

The answer is the appearance of a comet.

Correct. The 'Hastings' one , depicted in the Bayeux Tapestry, was visible over England and Normandy from the first days of April. The battle was in October. The comet was indeed Halley's comet.

May I just add a quick rider to this question and voice the opinion that a trip to see the Bayeux Tapestry just north of Caen in France is a highly memorable experience. The small cathedral in the townis pretty impressive too and there's a fine little museum right next to it. (Sorry, I know this is off subject).
