I will venture a guess and say it was manufactured as sewing thread...and during the war it replaced the silk that was used in parachutes. I don't know where it was first sold but I believe nylon stockings made their debut at the San Fancisco Exposition.

All links I found so far all say the asme thing Made and Sold In New Jersey Rare defeat for me I think it was a sample run? Merchandiser would put several boxes on display in a local shop (to the factory) and see if they were popular? Common practice in Retail Trade.
