Are you refering to the fact that in the past (don't know exact time period) people who didn't know how to read/write would sign thier name on business transactions with a thumb print?

Hi Mozart,
Several sites say the Ancient Babylonians used fingerprints as identification in business transactions. This was around 1000-2000 BC.

History of Fingerprints Time Line.

It seems it wasn't until 14th century Persia, when government papers had fingerprints, that it was observed that no two fingerprints were alike. But fingerprints weren't used as a means for personal identification until the late 1800's. Wikipedia

Hi dance girl. You know your first link gives China 3000 BC. and that's also what I have. Thanx. Perhaps the term "identification" was a little misleading here. Smile

My source.
