According to insurance company estimates made before building started, thirteen men would die while making the St. Louis Arch. How many men actually did?

Fortunately, the predictions were a bit pessimistic. According to this source, no one lost their lives. I had the pleasure of seeing the Arch up close and personal while on a tour to St. Louis and Branson four years ago. Seeing the Arch was very impressive. What was even more impressive is that the pinheads that ran the tour sent a bus driver who had no idea how to get from St. Louis to Branson nor how to get around in St. Louis yet managed to get us to where we were supposed to go with a minimum of difficulty.

Interesting link from Jelp. Though I'm not sure I'd agree that in 1965 "cars had fins." 1965 Cars (Popular Mechanics).

Got it, Jelp. No lives were lost constructing the Arch. That may have been the only unexpected event, or non-event, in the construction. When it was time to fit the last piece in, in the middle at the top, it was found that there was a very slight misalignment, due to the warming of the south leg by the sun's rays. So the fire trucks that were sitting there hosed the south side down. That was why the fire trucks were there. The expansion was planned for. The water cooled the stainless steel, the two legs came into alignment, and the trucks, their work done, went back to the fire station.

Jelp, the St. Louis area is very easy to navigate in, except for the perpetual road work on Interstate 64.

Professor, the 65 cars(and the 66 cars, which were out when the Arch wasw completed) didn't have fins, but fins were seen on some new cars until at least 61 or 62.
