For what reason are bright lights sometimes directly shone on Infants and newborns?

If an infant is jaundiced, he/she may be placed under a light to break down the bilirubin in the skin. The eyes are protected though.
(This seems to be a common practice - both of my babies were placed "under the light" even though I didn't think they looked jaundiced at all.)
