After lying dormant for nearly 400 years, Soufriere Hills suddenly erupted in July 1995, forcing the evacuation of Montserrat. There have been lulls in the volcano, prompting some property owners to return to the island with dire consequences. A 1997 eruption caused the same 100 MPH rush of gas and ash as seen from Mt. Pelee, killing more than a dozen islanders.
