Where and when was the first natural gas well in the U.S. discovered ?

Can't find anything to indicate "wells" were found earlier, but here's my source;

Both Jefferson and Washington were aware of natural gas "springs" which could be ignited by candle. These springs were also known to previous settlers and Native Americans. Jersey, is this what you mean by "discovered" rather than drilled?
