I have my email account with my dsl company, but am still getting spam. They said to set up an account with either yahoo, or hotmail to have to the option to use their junk mail option. Can you believe they said that? They have supposedly upgraded their anti spam protection that they have but say still spammers change so often that they can't keep up with it. So I have not used outlook express for years now, can't even remember how to set it up. I use to use hotmail because I liked the instant messaging, but then noticed that became very invasive on startup. I totally hate yahoo, it doesn't catch any junk mail, so what do I do. Has anyone decided which email program they prefer over the other? All I know is I'm getting very sick of fighting this spam thing, and I have got spybot S&D, adaware, and spywareblaster. It's getting to be a royal pain to just keep these sneaky viruses off of my pc's. Would mailwasher work on my broadband account?

I have two hotmail accounts, one for signing up to things and one as a very private account.
One thing to avoid with ANY email account is to post it to ANY web page. There are bots whose job is purely to trawl through the internet looking for email addresses.
If, and only if, you feel you have to post your email address change your email address in the following format eg joebloggs@blahblah.com to joebloggs at blahblah dot com
They don't need to trawled. The sender has to enter their email address and the recipients. It's simply added to their database. It's usually in their T&Cs. I never used to read them, but now I read them very carefully
Another thing NOT to do is to reply to any spam all you do is confirm that an email address is active and they will send you spam for eternity as well as sellling your address
There are automated tools that send randomly generated names out using the most popular mail servers, eg Yahoo, Hotmail, AOL, earthlink and in the UK, freeserve and btopenworld,
That is why you will see emails addressed to yourself and others with very similar naes
I use Mailwasher with cable broadband, Soaringhorse - and I'm signed up for Firetrust spam reporting. Mailwasher does intercept all e-mails to allow me to take a look before maybe opening them. So yes, it does work with broadband.
It does seem that I'm getting even more spam over the last few weeks. Has anyone else noticed an increase?

Yes, Puta, I never read the T&C's but like you say, it may be worth your while to spend the extra time to be safe. I think that my "new" rule of thumb, is not to check these greeting links.
There are some that you can save directly to your floppy disk and send them that way. If I can't, then I'm not going to bother with them.
Thanks again for the info!
Ewood, I have Mailwasher too and I really like it. Have you opened up many e-cards lately? I "blacklist" all of mine!

I'm glad I'm not the only one whose spam has increased. Mailwasher intercepts it fine, and my filters annotate it OK, so it's not a problem to delete it. Just a chore.
Tree, if I remember right from when profiles gave more details, you are rather younger than me, and female, which means you will move in circles where more e-cards are sent. I get them very rarely, and so far every one has been from a trusted source. I'm still cautious.
Soaringhorse, my apologies for going off at a tangent from your original question. This is hardly the first thread to change direction though!

No Problem, Ewood. I have been getting bombarded with spam too. Funny thing about it, as soon as I emailed my broadband server, and they replied back saying they just updated it, I have not (knock on wood) gotten any. Hmmm, very interesting, indeed! BTW, can you tell me where to get Mailwasher, is it free? Also, what's T&C's... Putasolutions?

Anyone not in your Windows Address Book (Same Address Book Outlook Express uses) will be deleted. And then sent a letter expalining so which U can also customize.
And the rest is left on the server so U can check from any mail client or Operating System with a POP3 mail account and POP3 compadible mail client.

I would pick Yahoo. I use it and AOL. AOL really is bad at blocking spam. Yahoo looks for spam and put's it in a whole diffrent folder so you can saparate your regular e-mail and your spam. With AOL you have to tell them what certin words to block like pharmacy, viagra, etc and you have to report spamers one at a time and you can't like report 10 if you got 10 spammers. So look look into yahoo.

I have a hotmail account set up with a junk mail filter that works wonders. My local ISP also has a program that works as a filter in conjunction with my Outlook Express account. And it works great too.
