I recently bought a new computer and am having trouble trying to transfer my file cabinet, email, address book, buddy list and favorites (bookmarks) from the old computer to the new one. I have Aol 8.0 on my old computer and it will not let me copy these things into a file or onto a disk so I can transfer to the new computer where I plan to use Aol also but probably a newer version since I don't think 8.0 is still available. Does anyone know how to do this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The latest version of AOL is version 9.5. If you have broadband, you can download it. If you have dialup, I suggest picking up a free AOL CD from a Target or Walmart store.

While you install AOL 9.5 on the new computer (it takes a few minutes), you can backup your personal filing cabinet from the old PC. The instructions also mention how to import the backup into AOL9.

If you haven't done so in a while, you may wish to review your AOL price plan. There are now plans offering unlimited dialup for around $10/mo. If you are a broadband user, you have the option of switching to the FREE AOL plan (no dialup access included).

Hope this was helpful!

JWooden,

Thanks for your reply. I will checkout the links you posted. I am on broadband now and have aol for free. I just liked my version 8.0 so never upgraded to the 9.0.

Are you saying I need to put the 9.5 on my old computer also or just the new computer? (Note: I can't have both hooked to the net at the same time so I am trying to move everything I can before I unhook the old one and hook up the new.)

Will I just be able to have access to all my old stuff (favorites, file cabinet, email, address book, etc) afer I have downloaded the new aol to my new computer?

I could not ask this question to aol directly because I have no technical support with them because of the free service. I am very glad you responded to my question.

You only need to install AOL 9.5 on the new PC. The existing AOL 8.0 on the old PC can be used to generate the PFC backup.

Once you have imported the PFC into AOL 9.5 on the new PC, you should have access to any AOL email, contacts, and filing cabinet items that were on your old PC.

As of AOL9, it is no longer necessary to use most of the filing cabinet features. AOL now provides unlimited email storage on their server. (Using the "Saved on AOL" folders) Address book entries are automatically synced to the server, so you can access them through AOL webmail. Once you import the PFC to the new PC, I would suggest copying the old messages into a "Saved on AOL" folder.

All the Instructions for a smooth transfer to
Version 9 & 9.5 are here on this 2005 Topic

But Last year I dropped using the AOL9 browser altogether (connection upgrade to DialBB need to contact AOL Tech support to activate) and transfer all my Bookmarks to IE7
AOL9 is rarely used
To get my AOL Mail I have installed the AOL Toolbar which is clutter free
http://toolbar.aol.com/
As for AOL favorites Which also have been Imported on the excellent Google Chrome browser www.google.com/chrome

This is what to do with the AOL 9 browser
need a visit to another site called www,linkagogo.com this is a FreeBookmarking save site. Need to register to Transfer the PFC file to the server (for your favorites) Then You export them Back as File suitable for Internet explorer(you get a lot more besides) as they give you a few hundred site free to help aquaint you with the Progam ... If you are lookin to do somthe clicking on the Tabs take you to the Right Page So Clicking on Import take you to the Import (favorites) list then choose the AOL 8 or 9 Personal Filing Cabinet(PFC) Beta Option, click the Browse button (Locate the saved PFC file on your computer) click on it then click the Open button... the File name will appear in the Slot scroll down the page and Click on the small import button

This starts the wizard and all your favorites are now stored on the Linkagogo Page(in several second)
Now the Problem...Any thing you have saved here cannot be returned to the AOL browser but...We are going to Send these to Internet Explorer(can go to othe place but Internet explorer is the easiest Transfer

This is very quick, as its half set up for you
page is headed Export bookmarks from your linkaGoGo account
Click on the Export tab
the setting is preset on Internet Explorer
Press the "Export" button at the Bottom of the List only click the "Show in Browser" box if you want to have a Live link page which is saveable

A Tip
quote:
With Internet Explorer 6 make sure you selected "Web page, HTML only" as the type in the save dialog.

The Other is It will make a download of the File to a place of your Choosing ( couple of Kbs)
Close Linkagogo You can access these files ans add to them from any browser (Have to remember the browser type)

Next step, again is very fast Open Internet Explorer Look in left top coener of the the Internet Explorer page and click on File
Big menu appears ..look for [b]Import and Export" (wording varies between different versions) click on this a message window appears (again the wording is different depending on which version you are using)
but the end result is the same
Click the Next button then click on Import Favorites to highlight it then click the Next Button on this window
Next window that appears may give you 2 choices (IE7&8) Import from a File or address is the Option you want. Click the Browse button to Locate the File you sent over from Linkagogo
This will appear in the Window then Click the Next button on this Page
there may be a message flashed up to confirm or acknowlege the file has been transferred?
Now..Click on the Favorites on the Internet Explorer...and Voila there are all your AOL Favorites in Situ Cool

Despite all the wordy instructions with practice. the whole job can be done in about 2 minutes
I have about 1500 favourites saved (as a backup at Linkagogo) They are exportable to Google Chrome via Internet Explorer (Even easier import wizard on that program Smile )
