AOL users can simply drag the Heart icon (that appears at the top of every window) into a mail message or instant message. No need to type out those long urls.

I'm not sure I understand why an AOL user would need to go through that procedure. JWooden's mention of using the "Favorite Place" icon to insert a URL works, but I usually do mine another way.
In the email text area, I just right-click, click "Insert Hyperlink" and enter (either by typing or pasting) the URL into the "Internet Address" box and a shorter phrase in the "Description" box.
It's basically the same way we link here at AnswerPool using the URL button. As far as I know, the links appear properly to my email recipients.

The instructions are for people emailing TO AOL users, not for people who have AOL as their email client.
If I were to email you via OE, and included a link in the email typed as: "www.whatever.com", you wouldn't be able to click on it in the email you received - you'd have to copy/paste it into your address bar.
In order for me to send you a clickable link, I would need to include the html tags described in the article.
Hope this clarifies things for you.
