Hi, my friend has xp home. All of a sudden in outlook express, when she clicks on an attachment,(.jpg and a few other file ext.) she doesn't get the security warning to either open or save, it just opens. I have searched everywhere for an answer. Even talked to outlook tech. They have no idea why. She has Norton and outlook 6. We have tried all the usual fixes, with no luck. Any help is apprieciated. Jooo

Any chance your friend downloaded and installed a new program? Possibly one, like Hotbar's emoticons plugin, that associates itself with OE?

I couldn't find anything in OE6's help file, but possibly one of our other members can help. TomGL2 and the forum moderator, Dwight, are particularly outstanding in ferreting out these types of singularities.

The 'Open Attachment Warning' associated with e-mails and news group messages in Outlook Express is displayed when the attached file name is clicked on. The user can then choose to 'Open it' or 'Save it to disk'. There is also a check box on the 'Warning' that says; 'Always ask before
opening this type of file.'

The 'Warning' is directly associated to the file suffix - for instance: .jpeg, .gif, .eml, .txt, etc. -- and this 'Warning' is coded for each type of file by the check in the check box.

So that, if a user were to inadvertently uncheck the box for '.jpeg' files, the 'Warning' will still appear for the other file types, but not for .jpeg files.

THE PROBLEM IS: How to restore the 'Warning' for that type of file, once it has been 'unchecked'?

*For Windows XP and ME, open "My Computer" and go to the "Tools" menu and select "Folder options", then the "File Types" tab. Click on the type of file and click "Edit".

Note: For WinXP in the Folder Options /File Types window, click the "Advanced" button, then in the 'Edit File Type' window, check the "Confirm Open After Download" option.

Then check the box that says "Confirm Open after Download". That should restore the "Open Attachment Warning for that file type extension.

You will need to do this with each file type extension that has been unchecked. One way you could check this is to send an email to your yourself with a variety of common file types. Reset the "Confirm Open after Download" option for any file types that don't show the 'Open Attachment Warning' window.

*For Windows 95 and 98,open "My Computer" and go to the "View" menu and select "Folder options", then the "File Types" tab. Click on the type of file and click "Edit"

And by the way jooo, Welcome to the AnswerPool! I hope you will enjoy this site as much as I do. If you would like to print out these posts, here is a printing tip.

I hope this helps!

Dwight

For sure these file extensions should have the 'Open Attachment Warning' associated with them:
.ade
.adp
.bas
.bat
.chm
.cmd
.com
.cpl
.crt
.exe
.hlp
.hta
.inf
.ins
.isp
.js
.jse
.lnk
.mda
.mdb
.mde
.mdz
.msc
.msi
.msp,
.mst
.pcd
.pif
.reg
.scr
.sct
.shs
.url
.vb
.vbe
.vbs
.wsc
.wsf
.wsh
Also, you will need to set the 'Open Attachment Warning' for both .jpg and jpeg file formats.

The best way to explain this method of restoring the "open attachment" dialog is to demonstrate. You mentioned JPG files, so I'll use that type in this example.

Close Outlook Express if open. Click start, Run, type Regedt32 and press Enter to launch the Registry Editor. In the left pane, double-click HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.

Scroll down and click .jpg. In the right pane, note the data beside (Default). In this case, the data is jpegfile. In the left pane, scroll down and click jpegfile.

In the right pane, right-click EditFlags and click Rename. Cursor left to the start of the name and type a period (" . ") to change the name to .EditFlags, then press Enter.

Close the Registry Editor. Open Outlook Express, open an e-mail with JPG attachment, and open the attachment to verify the "open attachment" dialog is restored. DONE.

To recap the basic method: (1) Locate the file extension in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT; (2) Note the (Default) value, and open the corresponding key; (3) Rename EditFlags to .EditFlags to disable the setting.

There you go, two methods which should serve. I suggest you try Dwight's procedure, however, as it is more "user-friendly".

Jooo, your question prompted me to put up a Web page with information about restoring the 'Open Attachment Warning' dialog box.

The page has basically the same information as in my post above, but includes pictures like this one. If you'd like to see the page, click on the picture above.

TomGL2, I tried looking in the Registry for a settings adjustment for the 'Open Attachment Warning' dialog box but couldn't figure out where to look. Thanks to your post, I now know where to find this kind of file attribute.

To Dwight:

In your "Computer How To's"

Under the listing of file extensions that should have the "Open Attachment Warnings", associated with", on your Page 3 & 4 of 5:

I found seven file extensions that were NOT listed in What's?com Program.

They were:

.ade
.wsc
.wsf
.wsh
.jse
.vb
.vbe

The What's?com, I notice, has not been updated since 04/29/2000. Maybe that explains why these file extensions are not listed.

However I did find these file extensions listed under the following URL:

You might check these out when you find time to do so.
