You didn't mention receiving an error message, but I thought you might want to look at this page from Microsoft, just in case:

Cannot Compose a New E-mail Message in Internet Explorer If MSN Explorer Is the Default E-mail Client

The main section I wanted to point out is copy/pasted here:

CAUSE
"This issue can occur when the following conditions are true:

(1) Microsoft MSN Explorer is set as the default e-mail client in Internet Explorer (MSN Explorer is the default Web browser/Mail program for the MSN.com Internet Service Provider. This could have been pre-set by Hewlett-Packard)

(2) You attempt to compose a new e-mail message in Internet Explorer by doing one of the following:
You point to New on the File menu, and then click Message.

-or-

You point to Mail and News on the Tools menu, and then click New Message.

If Microsoft Outlook is installed on your computer and you attempt to compose a new e-mail message by using any of these methods, you receive the error message described in the "Symptoms" section of this article. If Outlook is not installed on your computer and you attempt to compose a new e-mail message by using any of these methods listed, the MSN Explorer e-mail client does not start. As a result, you are unable to compose a new e-mail message."

When using your http://mail.yahoo.com mail, do you click on the "Compose" button instead of the "File" / "New" / "Message"? If not, please give that a try.

You can verify which email is set as default this way:

In Internet Explorer, click the "Tools" menu, then the "Internet Options" command. Click the "Programs" tab, then the "Email" options. I suggest you set Outlook Express or Hot Mail as your default mail.

If nothing here helps, please let us know and we'll try something else.

Thanks for posting and welcome to the AnswerPool!

Dwight

Try shutting off the "Rick Text" option and see if you can type into the "Compose" window.

Turn off the "Rich Text" by clicking on "Plain" link. (Where you see the cursor in the picture above.

When the "Plain Text" is set, as shown in the picture above, click into the message body and try typing.

Are you using the "Freedom" Internet Security and Privacy software? If so, that is one reason the Compose box doesn't work when set to "Rich Text".

See this page for details: Composing Web mail with Rich Text format

Also, the "ActiveX" must be enabled or set to "Prompt" for Yahoo Mail (and Hotmail) to work correctly.

Problem: Yahoo mail not opening text area
Cause: ActiveX controls disabled
Solution: select enable or prompt ActiveX

How to: enable or prompt ActiveX
1. Open your Internet Explorer broswer program
2. Click on TOOLS in the tool bar
3. Scroll to INTERNET OPTIONS Click
4. Open SECURITY Tab
5. CUSTOM LEVEL box
6. Click ENABLE OR PROMPT all the ACTIVE X CONTROLS related boxes.
Except (A) Download signed ActiveX Controls (Set to "Prompt")
(B) Download unsigned ActiveX controls (Set to "Disable")
(C) Initialize and script ActiveX control not marked as safe (Set to disable).

7. Click OK
8. If your choice was to Prompt, when you open yahoo mail, select yes to the pop up run ActiveX controls, and you will be able to type your message.
9. If your choice was to enable, Yahoo mail will open with no ActiveX Yes/No run box

P.S. Next time, click on Post > Topic, instead of Poll, unless you're just looking for opinions.
