Lately, I`ve been getting e-mails from various addresses(different address every time) which seem to be around 124k or something big like that, but when I open them, there`s absolutly nothing there! At first I was afraid that I just opened up somekind of virus, but nothings ever happend. Should I be worried about this? Does anyone know what these big, blank e-mails are? Better yet, is there a way I can stop them from coming to me in the first place? Any kind of reply would be appreciated!

While I don't have the answer, I am also getting these e-mails. Have look at the text area and nothing there.

I have been under the opinion that a virus could only be transmitted by opening an attachment. This may be some "sub-post" virus that you can get be just receiving an e-mail.

May be one of our web Gurus can help all of us.

Is that what is happing?

If it is Hotmail or MSN.com web mail, the service is automatically checking attachments for viruses using McAfee Anti-Virus. If an attachment has a virus, it is deleted automatically and all you'll see is a blank page.

If you're using Yahoo Mail, any attachment will have a link "Scan with Norton Anti-Virus". You can click that to have the email attachment scanned at the mail server before downloading. I highly recommend using that link.

If your mail is the standard POP3 (Post Office Protocol) the standard for Internet Service Provider (ISP) email, then it most likely not being automatically scanned. In this situation, I would be concerned that it may indeed contain a virus.

If you don't have an anti-virus program, I suggest buying and installing one very soon. I like Norton Anti-Virus 2002, but McAfee makes a good one also.

You can have an "On-line" scan of your system done for free using Norton Anti-Virus. I suggest doing this soon:

Click the "How safe are you?" link, then choose the Scan for Viruses

Hi all...I just recently was attacked with the Klez virus. At the time I did not have an anti-virus progarm, and Klez wouldn't let me install one. The troubleshooting program that McAfee sent me did not help so I eventually had to erase my hard drive & start all over.

I now have McAfee Virus Scan, and also use "Mailwasher", a free email monitoring program.

I'm still getting "recipient unknown" returned emails from 10 days ago. They contain the virus, but I'm very careful to not allow them to get into my Inbox. With Klez, I don't think you even had to click on the attachment to be infected!

I went to symantic's site (I/ve had some scares lately, with McAfee catching bugs, some of the files were really hard to delete). Virus check showed I have 1 file infected with JSSeeker. The file is
C:\windows\TemporaryInternetFiles\Content.IE5\3UDHEXJB\
and symantic advised I delete it.
I used Windows Explorer.
When I found the file and tried to delete it, Windows Explorer warned me that it is a system file and its deletion may cause windows or another program not to work properly. Should I delete it anyway?

C:\windows\TemporaryInternetFiles\Content.IE5\3UDHEXJB\

This is the pathway to the file, the actual file would follow the last folder name: 3UDHEXJB\

In any event, I'm not sure what file is going to be deleted, and I don't know what version of Windows you're running; i.e. Win95, Win98, Win98 SE, WinME, WinXP, etc.

No matter what the operating system, there is a method for restoring windows system files, and if one is contaminated with a virus, the file needs to be removed and replaced.

I looked up the "JSSeeker" virus, and found references to two different ones. Will you go this Norton site and determine which is the one you're dealing with?

Please post another note and let me know the results of your search, and your operating system, as well as the filename of the file to be deleted.

The filename as it it shown is what symantec reported yesterday. There was no further text to the right of the last \
When I reran the virus scan today it failed with the message that I should change my browser settings to enable active X and scripting.

Something isn't working right and I withdraw my question as you have insufficient information to help me out. Thanks for trying.

Thank you for emailing me and guiding me through the GREAT VIRUS ESCAPADE, Dwight. Wish I could get that kind of support from my ISP! System's fine now.

Lungbutter, I had gotten a couple of those big, blank emails, too. And, like you, wondered
about it being a virus.

One of my AP friends provided this link: Klez Info which confirmed my suspicions - especially the subject lines.

Based on Dwight's answer, hotmail had apparently already stopped it. (Although when someone sent ANOTHER type of virus the attachment showed up and McAfee stopped it when I tried to open it. With the Klez emails, there was no attachment to click on.) Another friend mentioned that some mail servers have been "stripping" tens of thousands of these viruses every day.

I've got PC-Cillin and have downloaded all their updates and run scans several times - all of which indicate my machine's OK.
