I am going to Clearwater, Florida next week for training. I looked at the website to see what I will be allowed in carry-on. I don't know if it's been updated, since nothing is listed as a 'can't bring' like hair gel.

I can bring a laptop, a cell phone/wallet, a coat, and one item to read. Here are my questions: I have two allergy medications, will I be allowed to carry them on? One is a pill, one is a spray. Can I bring a Quran and a Bible on board, provided I fit them into my laptop case? What about toothpaste or mouthwash? How about Tic Tacs?

I wouldn't bring a Quran on, VV. The only reason to do so would be to read it in-flight, and I don't think that would be a good idea. Unfortunately, too many, including TSA and airline employees, will see the Quran in the hands of a dark-haired female and start asking questions. Why risk having problems for such a short flight?

True DG. I didn't think about it that way. I wanted to read it in-flight, I figured it was as good a time as any, but I better think about the time of year and the tender feelings of my fellow passengers. I am going to try and download it, though.

Anything else? I wanted to arrive with fresh breath, but I may be out of luck. One could construe such things as alcohol or a flammable substance. I guess my Binaca Fast Blast is out of the question.

I travelled back from New York last week and we couldn't bring any liquids whatsoever on the plane. This included drinks, toothpaste, any gels, fragrance, make up etc. You will be allowed prescription medication.

Enjoy your flight Smile

If I remember correctly, prescription medication must be in the original container and have your name on a label from a pharmacy.

There's a big brouhaha in England over violinist Viktoria Mullova not being allowed to bring her Strad on the flight to the US. So much so that conductor Mark Elder made a big deal about it during the last night of the Proms. Seems the officials will change their mind and allow instruments on board.

Not just this performer: it was a problem for much of the proms season and generally. We nearly lost a whole orchestra and we had the absurd position that Joshua Bell played one night in the first half and then had an assistant straightway take his violin by train overnight to Cologne for his next performance.

Another puzzled performer observed that everything was fine until somebody in airport security must have mistaken his viola for a tube of toothpaste Big Grin

In the days when I used to tour, I always booked a group of 20 seats on the plane (or four if I had decided to travel first class) to accommodate my Bösendorfer Imperial on the plane. No way would I trust that to be taken care of in the hold below...I have seen cargo handlers working in Dubai, and it was scary...

My understanding is, and it may be urban legend, that Horowitz used his own piano when he did concerts.

Or he could have been under contract to play only, say, a Steinway and had to ensure that he had access to that make Big Grin That's not as daft as it may sound. It's why performers have to learn the peculiarities of the Steinway, a make which was long the contracted instrument at big concert halls. Ritzmar obviously preferred a better one Big Grin

Oh, he played a Steinway. I remember the Cliburn competition years ago, when there were 5 pianos to choose from. Most of the competitors chose a Yamaha.
