It has nothing to do with physics. The name just means "the works after physics" (by Aristotle). Now it's often used loosely to mean "supernatural" (related to definition 3 at the link, below). But it has several meanings, chiefly the philosophical study of reality. No offense to Merriam-Webster, but I think The American Heritage Dictionary does a more thorough job with this one.
