We have the same problem, with our flowers- we don't have a veggie garden. I know it's chipmonks and not cutworms because the soil is dug up at the base of the plants and tossed out of the planters. We have a dog that LIVES to chase the squirrels and chipmonks but they still do their damage. An option is poison but of course you run the risk of pets eating the poison or the dead animal that has been poisoned. We choose to plain old ignore the pesky critters. p.s. When I use the I.E. spell check, chipmonk is not a word, but chipmunk is. Go figure. I'll check the dictionary. dictionary says chipmunk.

Are you sure it's chipmunks & not squirrels? We don't seem to have many chipmunks where I live, but we sure have alot of squirrels - everyone in the town puts out corn cobs for them to help keep them happy so they'll stay out of our gardens!
I just transplanted a bunch of bulbs last week, and sure enough, the next morning, I could tell there had been some digging going on! The same thing happens when I first put out my perennials in the early summer.
Squirrels are really, really bad for digging up newly planted things...

It's possible. We have tons of grey & red squirrels, and chipmunks. I'd put money on the red squirrels or chipmunks, I've seen them both digging.
