We have the same problem, with our flowers- we don't have a veggie garden. I know it's chipmonks and not cutworms because the soil is dug up at the base of the plants and tossed out of the planters. We have a dog that LIVES to chase the squirrels and chipmonks but they still do their damage. An option is poison but of course you run the risk of pets eating the poison or the dead animal that has been poisoned. We choose to plain old ignore the pesky critters.
p.s. When I use the I.E. spell check, chipmonk is not a word, but chipmunk is. Go figure. I'll check the dictionary.

dictionary says chipmunk. big grin

I've had the same problem. Since it seems like all they do is rip my poor plants out of the pot and leave the mess and destruction for me to clean up. I feel like they are only doing it to p*** me off!;)

One thing that's worked: I took the hair off of my brush and placed it on one of my plants. Problem is I don't lose that much hair so I didn't have that much to spread around my whole garden. It's worked in that one container though.

Are you sure it's chipmunks & not squirrels? We don't seem to have many chipmunks where I live, but we sure have alot of squirrels - everyone in the town puts out corn cobs for them to help keep them happy so they'll stay out of our gardens!

I just transplanted a bunch of bulbs last week, and sure enough, the next morning, I could tell there had been some digging going on! The same thing happens when I first put out my perennials in the early summer.

Squirrels are really, really bad for digging up newly planted things...

It's possible. We have tons of grey & red squirrels, and chipmunks. I'd put money on the red squirrels or chipmunks, I've seen them both digging.

I have successfully used mothballs or the mothball flakes to keep unwanted pests out of the garden.

Also, sprinkling dried habernero(sp) pepper on the dirt will keep them out.

If all else fails, get a cat.

I picked up some stuff called Liquid Fence this weekend. You spray it on your plants and it smells absolutely putrid (pretty much a combo of vomit, manure and rotten cheese) until it dries. The smell is supposed to keep rabbits and deer away. I'm hoping it also will work on squirrels because they are destroying the container garden I planted on my condo deck (top floor). I sprayed some of my plants with it last night and immediately they were swarmed by flies. Disgusting. But they went away as soon as the spray dried and the smell dissipated. I'll keep you posted.

Just an update on the liquid fence: I think it's working. I'm hesitant to say for sure for fear I'll jinx it, but I saw the squirrel/usual suspect on my deck, eyeing my garden lovingly, but then he took off. That was yesterday, and today things are still A-OK. More to come...
