Oh crud...I missed another birthday? And you are always so good remembering all of ours....
First, cut your flower stems diagonally with a very sharp pair of scissors. Remove any leaves that will fall below the water line as they will rot in the water and start the growth of bacteria. Then use lukewarm water, add a teaspoon of sugar and a few drops of bleach or an aspirin. Some people prefer to use a lemon/lime soda. I prefer the sugar and aspirin myself. The sugar acts as food for the flowers (flowers naturally convert sulight to glucose during photosynthesis) and the aspirin increases the water's acid level.
Place your flowers in the water mixture and you are good to go. Make sure you change the water when it starts to look cloudy and also make sure the flowers are not near any heat source. Proper care and your flowers can last up to 21 days.

When I get fresh flowers I weed through them, decide which ones are the prettiest, hang those upside down to dry, the rest I re-cut, put in a vase with a couple of aspirin a tablespoon of sugar and collect the dead stuff as they fall. About every three days I pull them, change the water mixture, recut the stems about ½ inch above the old “healed” stem, weed out the not so pretty flowers.
