I bought 2 lily plants this spring and they have stopped blooming now. Where the flowers were I now have a seed cluster. Or at least that's what it looks like!

I thought lilies grew from tubers. What can I do with these green seeds? Should I plant them now? Dry them out first? Refrigerate? Helllllp!

Catty,
What kind of lilies were they? If they're Calla Lillies or Day Lillies, you can leave the seeds on the plant and once they are completely dried, you can save them and plant them in the spring, or you can sow them now (depends on your weather - if you don't get a frost, they may be ok).

Some lillies are from bulbs - some are from seeds. I'm not familiar with all the different types, but I do have some from both.

Lydia, I don't know what kind they are, but their flowers were lavender, dark pink, pale blue and small, not big like calla lillies, and they're much prettier than day lillies - something you'd put in a bride's bouquet.

I have already removed seeds, so I guess I'll just dry them inside then plant.

Thanks for your help.

Catty,
are you sure they were lilies? I've not ever heard of lavendar or pale blue lilies. Were they very fragrant??? Did they have more than one blossom on a stem? I ask only because what came to mind were freesia. They come in lavendar, blues, yellow, light and dark pink, white and are often found in bridal boquets. Here is a picture of one for reference.

I'm pretty sure they are lilies, colored lilies to be exact. They look just like calla lilies except they're colored. Here's a picture:

So they ARE calla lilies - just colored ones. The colored ones do tend to be a little smaller, but not by much. Unless you are in a tempered climate (zones 9 or 10), you need to dig up the tubers that are in the ground and replant them in the spring.

HERE is a web site that shows the seed pods that you mentioned as well as what you should do with them for growing. The new seeds you plant will not likely have blooms for a few years.

Good luck!! Smile

Thank you, Lydia, that was very informative. I'll try those suggestions.

Lilies are interesting plants, don't you think? I have had fresias before and I must say they are hardier than the flowers would indicate. I have a calla lily too, but it's trying to recover from transplant.

check with the nursery from where the flowers came; they are a hybrid and a latest fad but if they are hybrid chances are your seeds will not be what you think they should be.

boy do I love the fragrance of freesias; but don't they bloom for just a short time in the spring. Mine do. Do you get them to bloom longer than a month or so?
