After your plants have been frost killed, cut them back to the ground and provide a light airy mulch of evergreen branches or similar material. The most dangerous problems for Chrysanthemums in the winter are constant wetness. Frost heaving caused by alternate freezing and thawing of the soil is a major problem that causes failure of the plants to survive the winter. I have had both success & some failures in planting fall mums.

I live in Missouri and we can have some cold winters. I have found that if I leave them alone and donot cut the dead off they do just fine. When spring comes I cut the dead off. If I cut mine off they tend to die. Now if it is a extremly cold winter I might lose one or two. My mom use to cut hers off and most would die she left her alone last year and they lived.
Did you know that during the summer if you take a cutting from a stem and put it on the North side of your house or where there is shade and keep it wet it will root and you make lots more plants. I would move them before winter.
