"The Mother Earth News" recommends horse manure. The author of the article experimented and found that deer did not intrude on plants surrounded by horse manure and would eat the non-treated plants.
If you have any riding or boarding stables near you, some are happy to allow you to take it away for free!

as plants that will deter deer.

My father-in-law got lion scat. I am not sure where he got (he may have contacted the local zoo) it but he did. It worked for him, and his 5,000 tomato plants.
