I received a (very nice) small ceramic bowl with a metal floral frog with pins. I would love to use it, but can't figure out how. The bowl is very small -- maybe 2-3 inches high and about 3-4 inches diameter. I understand how the frog works, I just don't get what to put in it (large flowers would overwhelm the small bowl, and I don't see how the frog will hold very small stems). I would appreciate anyone with flower arranging skils giving me a few tips on what to do with this.

A floral frog is a flat piece that has prongs on it...they also make them as a round item with holes in it. In either case, it sits in the bottom of a bowl or larger type vase. It will hold the stems of the flower upright in the bowl. Typically you'd use flowers that have some type of thick stem (something like a violet would be too small and fragile to put into a frog. Even if flowers are large, you can use the frog, you'd just have to cut the stems down to about 2 inches above the bowl that you are placing them in. Experiment with it...it's not difficult to use. You can pretty much use any type of flower (once you put in larger flowers, the frog makes it easy to fill in around it with smaller stemmed flowers and/or greens). You could also use dried flowers with the floral frog if you wanted to create something in the bowl that you could keep.
Claire, you're thinking of those ceramic frogs...where the mouth is open an you use it for a sponge.
