i have had my little christmas cactus for about a year. when i bought it, it had really pretty flowers on it. of course, i can't get it to bloom again, but in the meantime i have watered it quite a lot and it has really overgrown the windowsill and it´s pot. the shoots are often so heavy that if the plant drys out a little, it will drop 2 or 3 "leaf" sections. what should i do for it?

By the calendar, here's the general schedule of the ideal life of a Christmas Cactus:
Jan - flowering

Feb, Mar - resting (55 degrees, infrequent watering)

Apr, May - water thoroughly when potting mix begins to dry out

Jun, Jul, Aug - place outdoors in a shady spot. (Remember that slugs will seek it out, so protect your plant!)

Sep, Oct - plant prepares to flower. Keep on the dry side and cool until flower buds form. Then increase water and temperature.

Nov, Dec - flowering. Water normally. Temp no lower than 55.

I wouldn't worry about a few sections falling off. In fact, I pull alot of the ends off my cactus to shape it. I would put the plant in a size larger pot, and follow the above instructions. Good luck with your plant. Smile
