I started an Avocado, it is about 2 feet tall now. My father in Law continues to tell me that you can't get avocados from a tree started from the pit (seed)

He also tells me that my 4 year old apples trees (started from seed) will never produce, and that my nectarine tree (which is in blossom right now) will never produce fruit.

Now I might be this stupid so correct me if I am wrong, before man came a long with grafting and all that stuff, did not these plants grow from seed and bear fruit?

Growing a fruit from an avacado seed is possible, but unlikely. The time from seed to fruit is about a 10 years and that would be under good conditions.

Check out,

AvacadosFromSeed

Good luck with your Avacodo. Smile

Hmmmm if your nectarine is in
bloom... look out!! Fruit may
be coming! Is this the first
year that it's bloomed?

I had an avacado plant that was
about 5 feet tall, never saw
any avocados.

I plant my tomatoes from the seeds
of the plants from the previous year.
I smear the insides onto a paper towel
and let it dry, fold it up and put
it away. The following year, I dampen
these paper towels for several days
until they sprout.

I planted my huge artichoke plant
from a seed as well, which produces
plenty of artichokes!

Years ago, my father threw an apple into the yard. It's now a twenty foot tree that produces tons of apples.

Your avacado MAY produce fruit from 5 to 7 years after planting, but will not be of the same quality, as all avacado trees are grafted for a specific type of fruit. Also, apple, nectarine and other fruits will produce fruit after a time, usually around 7 years, but again, they will not be the same as the fruit from which the seed was taken. Some seed come from hybrids, and others from grafted fruit trees.

Ah, so then you can get fruit from a seed. Just have to wait and make certain the tree grows.

YEs, this is the very first year my nectarine put out blossoms. It's parent died from dry rot a couple three years ago. It, and several others, were planted by the parent. I was able to save three of them, two of the little trees are doing very well, I think I lost the third since it is barely budding this year.

As for that Avocado. I have it outside, it is presently in a pot. And during the winter it will be brought in for the first few years. We live in California, with mild frosts if any - After it reaches a good height, I will plant it in the ground.

Cheers

David
