Yes, you can, but it would be a good idea to put rocks or marbles in the bottom to help in drainage. It'll still be more succeptible to root rot more than in a pot that drains.

Most times when I have a nice clay pot, I don't plant directly into it...I get another pot a bit smaller but that has a drainage tray for the plant itself - so the clay pot ends up more of a holder.

Kitty, ask your father if he has a drill with a ceramic bit. (Actually, you may even be able to use a wood bit.) If so, and if the drill is a variable speed one, just drill a hole yourself. Drill it very slowly (at a low speed) so as not to crack the pot.

Kitty, is your pot clay? If so, don't forget that clay is porous and that will help with dispelling some of the moisture.

I'll do what giz suggested and put down some clean rocks at the bottom. It should be fine. Just don't water as often.
