There's a cute little flower that thrives on neglect and self-seeds, so a contained bed such as you describe sounds good. I even found one that grew in the road mulch in our driveway! It's called Johnny JumpUp, and it's a member of the violet family. It grows in low dense clumps and likes to share, so it's good for borders. One larger one I really like, also very tough and tolerant, is one of those furry-grey-leaves type, it has pretty white or bright vivid rose-colored flowers, it's campion. It's classed as a perennial but it also self-seeds readily so you can dig it up in the fall and if you want more the next spring, there they'll be! Maybe if you get a seed catalogue, or visit a seed supplier's website, you will find one of those sets of seeds or plants that are designed to go together. There'll be one called 'sun-loving annuals' for sure! And they'll be color-co-ordinated!

Full sun, low maintenance, annual... Not sure what your zone is, but for short plants, creeping zinnia. For taller (1-3ft), sunflowers, Melampodium, or African marigold. You can check out the search page that the Missouri Botanical Garden has and put in your zone and specifics and see what you come up with. There are a lot of nice perennials that like full sun, too, if you don't want to be replanting all the time.
