I have a compost heap in my back yard. I actually haven't had one before but my Dad always had them when I was a kid. I am wondering if there is anything special I need to do to prepare it for the winter other than cover it? Is it going to become a haven for garden pests due to the present heat of the decaying foilage? Thanks in advance for the help.

Animals will probably not be a problem. You should cut waste into small pieces for faster composting, cover any food scraps immediately, and not add meat or fat. Putting a cover on oand/or surrounding it with mesh isn't usually necessary, but can help.

Compost is only vegetation - be it vegetables, or lawn clippings. NEVER meat etc.

Compost bins are best when slotted so that air can circulate. You can aide in the process by using things like "rot it" etc. It's up to you.

Are you planning a veGie garden? Great stuff to use to get your garden started in the spring!

I do it every year. Wink

No I was thinking of flower beds next spring. I live in a really nice area now and my yard is pretty plain. I thought I would spruce it up a bit with some flora and maybe get a few more heads turning in the general direction of the logo on the back of my car.Wink

LOL KK!

Yep, will work for general gardening as well!
Wink Remember to keep moving it, if it's not in a slotted bin.

KK.. I saw this rotating compost bin advertised.. I wish I could remember where I saw it... I thought about buying one for my mom and step-dad. I'll see if I can find it.
