This plant has a woody stem. It is in a (dry, sunny) neglected area of the yard, and I'm thinking of moving it to a better spot since it blooms so early, even before it leafs out! If I relocate it, I'll probably buy some others to make a little group. So I need the name.

This photo was taken today. It's been in this spot for several years anad is about two feet tall.

Here.

I got it from a friend locally, and she doesn't know what it's called.

By the way, what about these cuties?

Those crocuses are lovely for sure.

As to your other pic... It was taken in such bright light that it's difficult to see what, exactly, it is. Can you take another pic without the sun? Thanks.

Last is crocus.

The first needs a close up picture of the flowers. Perhaps a closer picture of the bud and bark as well.

Those green Buds, leaf or flower?

I notice smaller 'bumps' on the stems/branches are those leaf buds?

I can not distinguish the shape of the flower clusters so I'm still unable to offer a name (yet).

The little nubs are scars from last year’s foliage.

Yes, the buds are now breaking into leaf.

The bark is smooth. The grey blotchy marks appear to be algae.

The leaves are smooth, oval, tapered, with smooth (untoothed) edges. Veins are opposite and paired.

The flowers have four petals in a cruciform arrangement, which unite into a floral tube and are all pinkish violet.

The average diameter of each floret is 1 cm. across from petal tip to petal tip. The length of the floral tube where the petals unite and which contains the stamen and pistils is .9 cm.

I estimated the height of the bush as two feet. It’s actually 2.5 feet.

Here on the Sunshine Coast, in the rainshadow produced by Vancouver Island, the days are frosty and overcast in the morning but usually sunny by late afternoon. Lows are about zero, highs about 10 degrees C. (50 F.). This year we've had unusually heavy rain, but regardless, this is the time of year this bush blooms.

Greetings from the UK and my first visit to this site. The plant in question is a daphnia (I think the spelling is correct) I believe it has a strong scent also.

Good Heavens, Kingfisher !Of course,so it is ! Welcome to Answerpool. (Isn't this gardener lucky to have somewhere sheltered and frost-free to grow it? Around here, Newmarket, it needs a wall where the cold winds can't get at it). BTW it seems to be known to us only by its botanical name which is daphne.

By George, I think he's got it!

WickedPedia

Not only do I now know how to order it, but I have found that it's toxic! And it needs moister soil than it has right now.

Thanks a million! Smile
