This plant has a woody stem. It is in a (dry, sunny) neglected area of the yard, and I'm thinking of moving it to a better spot since it blooms so early, even before it leafs out! If I relocate it, I'll probably buy some others to make a little group. So I need the name.
This photo was taken today. It's been in this spot for several years anad is about two feet tall.
As to your other pic... It was taken in such bright light that it's difficult to see what, exactly, it is. Can you take another pic without the sun? Thanks.

The little nubs are scars from last year’s foliage.
Yes, the buds are now breaking into leaf.
The bark is smooth. The grey blotchy marks appear to be algae.
The leaves are smooth, oval, tapered, with smooth (untoothed) edges. Veins are opposite and paired.
The flowers have four petals in a cruciform arrangement, which unite into a floral tube and are all pinkish violet.
The average diameter of each floret is 1 cm. across from petal tip to petal tip. The length of the floral tube where the petals unite and which contains the stamen and pistils is .9 cm.
I estimated the height of the bush as two feet. It’s actually 2.5 feet.
Here on the Sunshine Coast, in the rainshadow produced by Vancouver Island, the days are frosty and overcast in the morning but usually sunny by late afternoon. Lows are about zero, highs about 10 degrees C. (50 F.). This year we've had unusually heavy rain, but regardless, this is the time of year this bush blooms.

Greetings from the UK and my first visit to this site. The plant in question is a daphnia (I think the spelling is correct) I believe it has a strong scent also.

Good Heavens, Kingfisher !Of course,so it is ! Welcome to Answerpool. (Isn't this gardener lucky to have somewhere sheltered and frost-free to grow it? Around here, Newmarket, it needs a wall where the cold winds can't get at it). BTW it seems to be known to us only by its botanical name which is daphne.
Thankyou. On my second visit here, I have a problem. I think I responded to a few posts, but can't remember where they were, is there any way of remembering ?

To check posts by any member, including yourself, click on their name at the top left of their post and then click on "View Recent Posts by" on the drop down menu.
If you want to be notified by e-mail of any further posts in a thread, click on "Notify" (the 4th box from the left at the top of that thread) and then clicking on your preference.
You can also check on all posts made since your last visit to AnswerPool by clicking on "Find" (the third box from the left near the top of the page) and then "New Since Your Last Visit".
Ah, that's better. I discovered from clicking on my own name, that I could check up that way, but the "view recent posts" is the one that I will use. thanks.
