Anybody ever find a solution for groundhogs? My dad used to shoot them, but he's passed away now. My mom once got so mad, she bludgeoned one to death.

It's too late for this season but I'm thinking about next year. They ate all the leaves off of tomato plants I spent 12 hours planting.

Hi Beckyddd, I don't think there is any one solution to the groundhog problem. I've had them in my garden year after year, and I've had to resort to your fathers tried and true method of getting rid of them. I've checked around the net, and no one has a fool proof method of getting rid of them, except to control the critters. I found this link that may give you a few ideas of what can be done. Ok, there are these things that look like dinamite, but are actually magnesium...and you light it and put it in the hole and then cover it up and it will kill the ground hog. Also, I used to put a hose down their hole. Oh, there is also a device that you can buy to attatch a hose to your car exhaust and then feed the hose into the hole.

I have not (yet, though I expect to this year) had a ground hog problem, but from those I know who do, shooting them seems to be the only surefire (pardon the pun) way to get rid of them. There always seem to be more, though, and they always come back. If you invest in a fencing system or repellent of some sort, try to get one that is guaranteed so you can get your money back if it doesn't keep the little buggers out.

On this broad topic, an American innocently posting on a British site wants to know how to get rid of gophers. Is the answer the same? We haven't got those, either.

We do have moles. It's quite hard to shoot them.

lighting magnesium is very poisonous be carful to not breathe the vapors smoke ect. maybe find out what like to eat ground hogs and get a few of those.

From Wikipedia - Common predators for groundhogs include wolves, coyotes, bobcats, bears, large hawks, and owls. Young groundhogs are often at risk for predation by snakes, which easily enter the burrow.

Awesome, I've always wanted a bear or a wolf. What I really need is a big bird that eats groundhogs and snakes. And is litter-box trained.
