I just got a hydrangea. I thought it was a house plant. Sorry no green thumbs here. Red Face Is it possible to keep it as a house plant? Or do I have to plant it out doors? I would prefer to keep it indoors.

Thanks for the link Tree. Nadca, Hydrangeas are plentiful here in the South and I did not think it was possible to keep one as a house plant as they flourish into bushes very quickly here. In the winter time one would prune the bushes back until they were mere twigs in the soil.

The one thing I regret about living in an apartment is that I never could plant a Hydrangea bush. But thanks to the info that Tree provided I now know that I can have a potted one of my very own Smile

I skimmed over the article quickly, but did not see what I have found to be the best indoor Hydrangea tip. When I use to take care of the hydrangeas when they came in in the Spring at the shop, I found that they really liked being watered from the bottom of their pots (like you would water an African Violet) rather than dumping water over the soil. Some of my deadest plants perked up with this! Try it!

Well you could. Basically.

they do grow rather large, however they respond well to trimming and pruning.

If you set them in a bright window (A southern Exposure) they will do rather well.

The problem may come when its time for the flower - Last year my flowers were more green than anything else. I assume that this is due to a lack of light since this hydrangea was in the shade - Dark light shade compared to a bright shade.

Anyway. I have had success starting off my new hydrangeas (from shoots) rooting them and keeping them a few years in the pot before finding a home for them.

Cheers
David

I think that THIS link is also interesting about changing the colour of the flowers on your hydrangea! I've heard some people feeding their shrubs grapefruit juice (acidic) etc to achieve certain results.

I have a few in my garden from vivid blue to pink to a gorgeous purple.
