Hollyhock can propagated by division or by seed. Dividing the plant should be done in the spring but may be difficult due to the taproot. Each division needs to have an eye or bud. The seeds of hollyhocks, ripen from the bottom up, just as the plants’ blooms develop, so harvest the ripened seed from the bottom as they dry. Jersey's answer is fabulous as always, I just wanted to mention that MY hollyhocks are also absolutely HUGE this year!
We're only a state apart so I'm sure it's due to the same reasons - a fairly mild winter and very wet and long spring. I have hollyhocks that are 5' high and only now just starting to bloom. Some of them are so big that they can't support themselves and just laid down on the ground...bummer
