The late Irish comedian,Dave Allen, remembered wondering this as a child: " If God has been there forever, what was He doing before he got to us? I mean, what was he out there doing? Was he sitting there going.. hmm...hum..I'm bored today. What'll I do?
Then He suddenly decides to create a world, out of nowhere: " I'll make a world. That's what I'll do ! Seas, mountains .." And whoosh! Everything's there. And He creates animals and mankind,to occupy the place.
Well, that's an innocent's question. But it carries in it the idea that we created God. He seems to have existed in Himself, just to create us.
So, what's the answer? What was He doing before deciding to create mankind?
There are speculative theories that ours is but one of an infinitude of universes -- the multiverse hypothesis. So maybe God was busy making other universes before he got to ours. Maybe he was backlogged a couple of trillion years?
The concept of time prior to the big bang is no mere child's question!

juanruiz: The evidence was in the form of a supposed picture of a human footprint next to one of a dinosaur.
All: I watch so many out-of-the-box shows, but after the series on the psychics who did know where people were hidden ended, I found "UFO Hunters" to give me a scare (and make me overeat), especially since the last sightings were a few months/weeks ago in Texas. My would-be competition is so much fun!
However, the "man track" [occurring alongside dinosaur tracks in the limestone beds of the Paluxy River, near Glen Rose Texas] claims have not stood up to close scientific scrutiny, and have been abandoned even by most creationists. The supposed human tracks have involved a variety of phenomena, including forms of elongate (metatarsal) dinosaur tracks, erosional features, indistinct markings of uncertain origin, and some doctored and carved specimens (most of the latter on loose blocks of rock).
Returning to the original question, a child might just as well ask what an immortal God will do AFTER the world ends -- i.e., when the universe has expanded to the point that all the remaining stars are just cold cinders and "heat death" has overtaken all the organized structure? Will He once again have to twiddle his thumbs for eternity? Perhaps he can take up knitting?

Sorry, dg. The Bible clearly refers to god as a male.
A puzzle in itself.
There is only one God in the Abrahamic religions. He is eternal. He does not have need of any ability to reproduce and, in any case has no goddess to reproduce with. 'He' should be It. " And on the seventh day It rested.."
Roman and Greek deities had the edge there.Their sex lives were active and varied (bestiality and incest included) as was their inventive use of parts of the anatomy.
He/It may have taken up golf, though it was wisely described by Churchill as a game devised by the Devil, played with implements ill-suited to the purpose. He would not mind that it takes an eternity to master . What's more it can be played alone. He could have built his own heavenly Augusta, complete with Amen Corner, to play on
However, Genesis clearly uses the plural form of the noun Elohim which, when combined with "let us create", cause no end of questions as regards how many there were.

So "I am the lord, thy God" and "You shall have no other gods before me" should read "We are the lords..." and " ...no other gods before us" ?
Moses should have gone up the mountain with his secretary. It's no good taking dictation yourself; you'll make mistakes that way
The word "us" does not refer to either two Gods/gods or two manifestations of one God, but the word "us" refers to two letters "u." In the image, flip the tail of the "u" over its top to get a semi-circle, and then do this again to get two semi-circles, which we may connect. This is the image in which God made man. There is more to this, but I am not saying more at this time.

It was kind of Him to give us an image in our alphabet , the letter U, when he had had the Bible written in another, the Hebrew alphabet.
