Can someone list for me some good, modern metal groups?

And if it's at all possible, can that someone clarify what classification System of a Down would fall into? I've been told so many things; liquid metal, industrial, plain old metal, someone even said alternative (someone else punched him in the stomach when he said this, rofl).

Sure, let's see. I'll start with a favorite: Tool. They are great. The type of metal they make is very unique. Some others may depend if you want harder metal or softer metal. Just off the top of my head: Opeth, Candiria, Machine Head, Earth Crisis, Nothingface, Godhead, Mushroomhead, Downset, Systematic, Down, Iced Earth. Try some of those and see what you like, what you liked about it, and would want more of if you'd like.

System of a Down as a mix of alternative metal and pretty much their own heavy metalish sound. A lot of people see alternative metal as an insult kind of because a lot of bands who are alternative metal are annoying and are known to overdo agnst and stuff but there are still plenty of quality alternative metal bands, some people just focus their criticizism to the ones that don't have as much quality. I would still definetly say System of a Down has alternative metal influence. I definetly haven't heard them do industrial though and I've never heard the name liquid metal.

One step ahead of you on Tool. They're my newfound obsession.

What about Static-X? Everyone agrees that they're industrial, but they sound a lot like SOAD. I like the bands just the same.

???

static x and soad are among my favorites.
who cares what category they are in?
every single person will call them something different.

most of the music i listen to is in the 'industrial' category.
you might want to check out skinlab, soil, ramnstein, prong, the prodigy (i highly reccomend this one), powerman 5000, nine inch nails if you havent yet, linkin park, drowning pool, saliva, slipknot.
not all of the above bands are 'metal' or 'industrial' but i like at least some of their songs, and there are a heck of a lot more out there that i like only one or two of the songs, and cant stand the rest.

dont base your music taste on a category.
look at linkin park. a lot of 'hard core' meatl fans hate them just because someone called them 'nu-metal', without even listening to them.

Static-X does sound kind of like System of a Down but I think Static-X sounds different with the extra industrial sound that they add. System of a Down doesn't have that.

Runic did say he likes the bands regardless of their style category. Styles are just descriptions. Usually, there's no denying that a band is a certain style but sometimes how much of their sound is a certain sound could be discussed(hopefully with respect). Some people will unfortunetly generalize styles and I try to teach them. Usually, whether they hate them though is based on the sound and/or popularity(even if neither, basing it on the label is still probably not the reason) but usually the band already falls into the label.

Generally stereotypes are bad.

Oh man I'm good. Big Grin

I listen to all sorts of stuff. It's easier to name what I don't listen to than what I do. Actually, that's a false statement. I listen to ranging sorts of metal, techno (happycore all the way Big Grin), and i'm especially fond of bossa nova.

Anything that floats your boat.
