I was staying at a half-decent hotel recently where the in-house televison set had been converted into a music centre+TV where you could select the type of music you wanted to listen to. Great, I thought. The "Rock' and the "Jazz" sections were pretty good, but one of the other sections was "World Music", featuring nothing but about 20 different songs in Italian. Now, I've nothing against Italian, but is this all that 'World Music"'s seen as omprising? And is it standard hotel practice these days for anything that's not in English? What do hotels do in the US and elsewhere?

I've only listened to music in a hotel I think once and I don't think I tried world music, but I think there's a few reasons I'd guess. People don't know much about world music, it can be harder to find for lay people, and there's a lot out there. For those reasons, they probably wouldn't have spent much time trying to find some or research some. World music is certainly not seen as just Italian music. I wouldn't be surprised if there were hotels that realized better or at least tried to get a little more. I wouldn't be surprised if many people thought World Music was anything not in English though.
