It was a movie made in the 60s I think. Starring Shirley Maclaine for sure as a hooker.
I THINK that the male lead is Jack Lemmon. It is a comedy where he is her 'pimp' only because he loves her and wants to be with her. He tries to pursuade her stop her 'trade' and ends up resorting to subterfuge. He works full-time at a meat packing (I think) factory on her off-shifts and dresses up an an elderly gentleman who pays for her time every night to do nothing but talk.
There are a series of fiascos including jail-time for him for 'murdering' the elderly man he is portraying, she is vastly pregnant and goes into labor at the alter, etc.
What is this films name? I can't recall. ++++++++++ 11-06-06, 12:07 PM dance girl Hi there, i think the movie was Irma la Douce with Jack Lemmon Wink
11-06-06, 01:24 PM DorianGreyed Irma la Douce it is. The 1963 film won an Oscar for Andre Previn (Best Music, Scoring of Music, Adaptation or Treatment) and an Oscar nomination for both Shirley MacLaine (Best Actress in a Leading Role) and Joseph LaShelle( Best Cinematography, Color). MacLaine also won a Golden Globe for her role as Irma, and Lemmon was nominated for one. Lemmon had the unfortunate timing to be in the same year as Richard Burton (Becket), Rex Harrison (My Fair Lady), Peter O'Toole (Becket), Anthony Quinn (Zorba the Greek*), and Peter Sellers (Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb). A light comedy didn't have much of a chance against that competition. But that's another story...
*Zorba was actually a Macedonian. Big Grin
