I bought a VHS movie on Gettysburg-Civil war for those of you who don't know what I am talking about Big Grin -anyway the movie has Martin Sheen as Robert E. Lee and Jeff Daniels as a Union Officer but my question is this

All throughout the movie were 3 words displayed on screen and they said

SCREENING COPY ONLY

Does anyone know what that means and why would you have it on a movie?? Confused

Cyber, I've researched this, and it appears to me that it means that the movie has been examined, certain parts may have been screened out, and that it's now a made-for-television film.

"Screening" a movie is pre-viewing it, usually by critics and/or at a "special preview: or "Sneak Peek." Often, movies are edited after these early viwing, depending on reaction. Thus, a "screening copy" would be one that is not necessarily the final product.

Example: James Whale attended an advance screening of his "King Kong" and then removed a scene in which sailors were knocked off a log by Kong, falling into a deep chasm, where they were attacked (and eaten) by large spider-like creatures. Whale was later quoted as saying that the scene had to be deleted, since "It stopped the movie cold." It must have been too gory, too horrible for a 1930s audience.
