This is terribly sad. Minghella was such a talented guy. His adaptation of the novel, "The English Patient," for cinema, was pure genius. I have been a fan of his work since I saw "Truly, Madly, Deeply." His death is a huge loss to cinema.
Director Anthony Minghella, who won an Oscar for The English Patient and helmed other acclaimed films such as Cold Mountain, has died. The 54-year-old screenwriter and playwright made his cinematic mark with 1996's The English Patient, which captured nine Oscars, including best picture and a best supporting actress trophy for Juliette Binoche. In complete agreement with you dancegirl,a great loss to cinema.Funnily enough had a great urge to watch 'Truly Madly Deeply' on Sunday afternoon, was having lunch at my sister in law's and when she said she had nver seen it I drove the 15 mile round trip home to get the DVD and we watched it with our daughters and had a good cry. As you know The English patient is also one of my all time favourite films. And not forgetting he was screenwriter for the first Inspector Morse episodes He was born in the Isle of Wight, just across the Solent, where his family still run an Ice-cream factory (Great Ice-Cream).
Hi Viv, I didn't realise Minghella did some of Inspector Morse. That was another favourite. Now, what I wanted to ask, was that when I originally posted about his death, I read somewhere that he was involved in the production of an adaptation to screen of "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency" by Alexander McCall Smith. I think I read it was a TV production. I read the book and loved it. So has anyone in the UK come across this on television yet? Just hoping we'll get it here evenually. Thanks, dg
Hi dg, It was screened on BBC 1 on Easter Sunday.Un fortunately I wasn't able to watch it,but I am sure it will be repeated in the near future. If it comes on again I can put in onto DVD for you if you have a multi-regional player. Viv

That would be absolutely wonderful, Viv. We probably will get it here, but there's no telling when that will be. So if you come across it, let me know, and I'll send you my address. Thanks so much. dg
