How do I use the computer's microphone to record someone reading a paragraph?

Then I want to insert that sound file into a PowerPoint presentation.

I have Windows ME and a Dell Dimension 4100.

Thanks.

Open the Sound Recorder program. It is in your Program menu, perhaps under Accessories/Entertainment.

Click the "Record" button and speak into the microphone. When finished, press the "Stop" button.

Save the file and use the PowerPoint "Insert" menu to include the audio file.

I hope this helps!

Thanks Dwight

I tried this and it recorded my voice. I inserted the sound file into my PowerPoint presentation, but there was alot of static and my voice was very faint compared to the loudness of the static, even though I held the microphone right up to my mouth.

I have never used the microphone before. The computer is about 3 1/2 years old.

Am I doing something wrong?

My speakers seem to be working fine otherwise.

Check to insure the microphone is completely plugged into the computer.

Also, you might try setting the microphone down instead of holding it. It may be picking up static electricity from your hand.

This is from the sound recorder help menu:

"To change the quality of a sound file

On the File menu, click Properties.
Under Format Conversion, click the format you want.
Click Convert Now.
Specify the format and attributes you want, and then click OK."

You might try the CD Quality, with 48,000Hz 16-bit, Stereo.

I made a brief sample of an audio file for you to compare: Click Here (Right click on the link and choose "Save Target As", or just click on it to hear it.)

This was done at CD Quality, 8000 Hz 16-bit stereo.

I hope this helps!

Thanks Dwight

I tried your suggestions. I pushed in on all the mike cord and it seems to be in all the way.

(By the way, you have a nice voice.)

I also changed the properties to CD quality, 48,000 Hz, 16-bit stereo. When I choose CD quality the Format box automatically shows PCM format.

Now I am not hearing my voice at all.

Do you think there is something wrong with my microphone?

I went out and bought another microphone at Radio Shack. I can hear my voice, but it is still very faint and would not be audible enough in a presentation.

Other sounds coming through the speakers are very loud by comparison.

Any other ideas?

My neighbor bought a Dell Dimension about the same time as I did. I know he didn't get as many features as I did, but if he has a sound card and speakers, would he also have a microphone jack?

Maybe I could try taking my new microphone over to his computer and recording there?

You can double click on the volume control icon near the clock and check to insure the microphone has not been "muted" or set to low.

If you don't have a volume control icon by the clock (looks like a little speaker), you can access it in the Control Panel, Multi-Media and Sounds.

You may need to click the "Options" menu and select "Advanced Properties" to see the microphone options.

Yes, your friend should have a microphone jack on his system.

And, thank you!

Thanks Dwight and ivnj:

Dwight, you were right about the mike being on mute. That was the problem. After unchecking that I was able to record fine.
