Just curious what this means.
How much are you willing to spend to get these files back?
Read this page, on a different computer, if possible.
Read this **************************************************************** 08-26-06, 12:39 PM Dwight With reference to my post above...If possible, use a different computer to read the link, but don't shut down your computer where the lost folder is.
Shutting down and restarting the system will reduce the chances of restoring the lost folder and its contents.
Dwight **************************************************************** 08-26-06, 12:40 PM DorianGreyed I assumed "gis" to be a typo, with "gifs" the intended word. (We are now past the edge of my computer knowledge, so I will shut up.) **************************************************************** 08-26-06, 12:48 PM bedstor If they do get recovered Can I suggest LL downloads and Installs Picasa2 which keeps tabs of where almost all the Photos are located on the Computer http://picasa.google.com/download/index.html **************************************************************** 08-26-06, 01:36 PM luckyladee ok I have gone on another computer and downloaded the tool to retrieve my folder called Gifs (sorry for the typo) what do I do now? burn the program on a disc and then go to the other computer and try the program? Thank you for your help. BTW I tried system's restore and that did not work. **************************************************************** 08-26-06, 02:24 PM Dwight You can easily run the program from a floppy diskette if your computer has a floppy drive. You can use a flash (jump) drive or burn it to a CD if you prefer.
1. Open the Restoration.exe file - I suggest you put it in a My Documents folder like:
"C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\OWNER\MY DOCUMENTS\RECOVERED_FILES"
2. Once opened, verify the "local Disk C:" is selected under "Drives".
Since you know that you want to recover .gif files, you can put the text .gif into the box where it says "all or part of the file". This way, only .gif files will be searched.
3. Then click the "Search Deleted Files" button.
4. My computer took about 2 minutes to make 10,331 files available to be recovered.
5. Select all file(s) that you wish to recover and click the "Restore by Copying" button.
6. It will open a Save window. It will suggest you save the restored file(s) to a different drive that the one it is being restored from. You could save it (them) to a flash (jump) drive or floppy diskette if you like. I would suggest you avoid trying to save the recovered files to the same drive so to avoid losing them all together.
See this picture Example of PNY flash drive **************************************************************** 08-26-06, 04:37 PM luckyladee I tried to do as you said but since they were all gifs that I had found on the internet or received from friends and I had kept them in my documents under a folder called gifs1 then I had sub folders called animals, diet, people, sayings ect ect. I can see the shortcut of my folders in recent documents but when i try to open them it says it is only a shortcut that the file is either moved or renamed therefore cannot be opened. so I guess all is lost....(sniff sniff) **************************************************************** 08-26-06, 04:49 PM dodgecity sorry to here that . but thats exactly why we all need to make back ups of our computers. its the safty net. again sorry for your losses i too have lost my files as probaly everybody has. **************************************************************** 08-26-06, 11:12 PM cswchan OnTrack's EasyRecovery Pro will recover up to 4 or 5 generations of formatting... **************************************************************** 08-26-06, 11:14 PM Dwight In that case, try it again (run the restoration.exe file) but don't limit the search to .gif image files. Leave the "All or part of the file" box empty. Doing this will find lots more files. You can recover a sampling of the images files to see what you've got.
Unless you renamed the individual picture files, the files will probably have file names like in the picture that I linked above. You can probably disregard any found files with file extensions other than .gif or .jpg or .bmp. These (.gif, .jpg or .bmp) extensions are image files. You can also disregard any files that are located in the Temporary folder because you had stored yours in the C:\ My Documents folder. Another picture
What I guess I'm saying is, don't give up yet. If you haven't restarted your computer or saved a whole bunch of new files, your pictures are still recoverable. How may files did it find for you? In my example, the number of files exceeded 10,000 See another example
If all this seems to much, may I suggest that you give me a call and we can discuss this over the phone? You will find my telephone number on my Webpage at: http://dwightblackburn.com
I live in Alaska which is Eastern time, less 4 hours.
Dwight

Look through then and see if any of your image files are there.
To find the images again, I suggest you use the google image search. Type in the subject of the image that you're looking for and then see if the results are what you're after.
This is an example of a Google Image Search for Bears **************************************************************** 08-30-06, 11:36 AM luckyladee thank you for all you have done your help was greatly appreciated.
