What's the best way to convert an image saved in Word (don't ask me why) to a jpeg file?

Open the image in Word. Use the PrtScrn key on the keyboard to copy the image to the clipboard. On a standard keyboard, this key is usually located to right of the F12 key.

Open your graphics program (IrfanView, if you have it) and click the Edit menu/Paste command.

Use the crop tool to crop the image as you desire.

If using IrfanView, click you left mouse button in the top left area where you wish to begin the crop. Hold the mouse button and drag to the bottom right corner of the image you want. Click Edit/Cut, then click Edit/ Clear Display, then click Edit/Paste and you should be left with your image. Click File/Save and save it in the .jpg format.

I hope this helps!

Thank you, Dwight. I suspected it was something like that.

I'll be out of town from Friday until next Wednesday. I'll contact you Thursday or Friday about getting Office off the restore disk.
